with the aim of regenerating the city. The
clearest example is the Guggenheim Museum
which has been a catalyst for the economic and
social development of the city and which has
raised the position of Bilbao in the world. I am
most proud of our achievement in restoring
the prominence of the people of Bilbao in
this process. It is the people who are day to
day making it possible for Bilbao to remain as a
living and referential city worldwide.”

Economic Impact
THERE ARE GESTURES IN MY SKETCHES. The reaction
to the building was strong which translated into
huge economic benefits.
—18 months after opening, there was a
28% increase in tourism to Basque region
(almost entirely attributed to museum)
—in the first 12 months, the museum added
$160m to the Basque economy
—there has been an avg of 1,000,000 visitors a
year to the museum since opening. 48% for,
35% dom, 17% local
—1997–2018: museum generates over 5 Billion
Euros of Basque GDP
—80% of all visitors to Bilbao cite the
Guggenheim as the number one reason for
their visit
The other numbers regionally are strong as well.
Unemployment currently sits at 14%, which is
high, but is half that of the rest of Spain. The
population leveled off and the kids who were
hell-bent on leaving town, decided to stay.
In fact the third most popular curriculum in
colleges in Bilbao is Architecture. The sheer
scale of added tourist numbers has created many
smaller service jobs and created an economy
for small business owners to flourish in with
all of the added bars, shops, cafes, small hotels,
restaurants, guides, tourist shops. The number
of business visitors to Bilbao has also increased
considerably. The number of conference
delegates arriving in the city has increased
tenfold to 178,000 per year over the last decade.
When I go to Bilbao, I get a lot of love from
people who live there. So, the museum works
for art, it was built on-time and on-budget,
the locals see it as a symbol of civic pride, the
client is happy and it helped with the economic
turnaround. It’s a great story and one that I am
proud to have been a part of.
The Guggenheim Museum BIlbao has generated
3.5 Billion Euros of Basque GDP (1997–2019)
