LTC 419-2022 Convention Center Hotel Site Early Work - Tree Relocations
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
LTC # 419-2022 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Honorable Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Alina T. Hudak, City Manager
DATE: October 4, 2022
SUBJECT: Convention Center Hotel Project – Site Early Work
Tree Relocations
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (“LTC”) is to advise you that starting on October 5,
2022, the landscape contractor for the Convention Center Hotel Project will begin the relocation of
two large, approximately 60-year-old, Calophyllum (a.k.a. Brazilian Beauty Leaf) trees from the
future hotel site to Pride Park, weather permitting. This work will require the temporary closure of
19th Street (east bound lane between Convention Center Drive and Meridian Avenue) for a 3-day
period.
The tree relocations are a necessary step in the preparation of the hotel site and have been under
coordination between the City and the Hotel developer, MB Mixed Use Investment, LLC (MBMUI)
for over six months. Permits for the relocation have been approved and issued by the City’s
Environmental Department, and M.O.T. and R.O.W. permits by Transportation and Public Works.
The M.O.T. calls for a Police escort due to the wide load of the trailer where the tree will be placed
for transport.
The cost of the relocations is funded by MBMUI and the work is being performed by Green
Integritys, Inc. under Grycon Construction, the developer’s contractor, for the site early work. The
relocated trees will be maintained by the developer for one year after planting.
On March 4th, 2020, the City entered into an Early Access Agreement (Early Work) to accelerate
the opening date of the hotel by allowing access to MBMUI to commence certain projects required
prior to the site possession date stipulated in the Ground Lease and Development Agreement. Tree
removal / relocation is part of the scope of work under the Early Work Agreement.
