COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Aline T. Hudak, City Manager
DATE: October 26, 2022
SUBJECT:A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA,AUTHORIZING THE CITYADMINISTRATION
TO DONATE TEN (10) TREES, VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY $6,000
TOTAL, TO THE MIAMI BEACH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL FOR ITS

RECOMMENDATION
The Administration recommends the adoption of the Resolution.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
The City of Miami Beach approved a $60,000 contribution to the Miami Beach Senior High
(MBSH) Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)for the renovation of the school courtyard
as part of the FY 2021 budget.
ANALYSIS
The City Commission approved a $60,000 contribution to Miami Beach Senior High for the
renovation of the school courtyard, however the funding was solely for infrastructure
improvements. The PTSA requested that the Environment and Sustainability Department
donate trees for the landscaping of the courtyard.
The donation will consist of ten trees/palms of eight different species. The proposed plant list
includes Green and Silver Buttonwoods, Thatch Palms, White Tabebuia, African Tulip,
Satinleaf, Cinnamon Bark tree, and a Red Latan Palm.
As the school and PTSA did not have any additional funding for landscaping, they are relying
solely on donations. Without landscaping the courtyard will not have the intended feel and
purpose as a location in the school where students can relax and relieve stress. It has been
proven that trees assist in increased cognitive function, as well as improved mood. Both of
those functions are essential to foster an environment conducive to learning.
The use of the funds as a donation requires approval by the City Commission. The source of
funding for this donation can be Sec. 46-65. - City of Miami Beach Tree Preservation Trust
Fund, which states: These funds shall be expended, utilized and disbursed only for the planning,
planting, establishment, education, or preservation of trees as designated in this division, by the

environment and sustainability department on publicly owned land, and upon approval of the City
Commission."
SUPPORTING SURVEY DATA
Less than half (49.4%) of Miami Beach residents are satisfied with the City's efforts to be a
green or sustainable city. By installing ten new trees at the MBSH courtyard we will be
contributing to our Urban Forestry Master Plan's goal of 22% canopy coverage by 2040. This
donation will also promote our urban canopy and an appreciation of trees to the students of
MBSH.
