STOLEN RESIDENTIAL PARKING VISITOR HANG-TAGS
Date: March 19, 2004
The Parking and Police Departments recently noticed an increased trend in stolen
residential parking hang-tags over the last eight months. There have been 62 reported
incidents of lost or stolen residential hang-tags during this period. Most of these have
occurred in Residential Parking Permit Zone Two (Flamingo Park) and only a handful have
occurred elsewhere. Both the Police and Parking Departments are taking proactive steps
to prevent these crimes including; instilling officer awareness so that there is keener
scrutiny of hang-tags; creation of a stolen hang-tag "blacklist"; and longer term solutions
regarding control issues such as hang-tag usage, shelf life, and technology enhancements
to improve enforcement efforts.
Recently, the media (Miami Herald and WFOR-4/CBS) inquired as to this issue. The
Police and Parking Departments granted interview; therefore, this issue should receive
some level of media exposure hopefully raising citizens' awareness to this issue. If you
have any questions or need any additional information, please feel free to contact me.
