Resolution 2022-32442 RESOLUTION NO., 2022-32442
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE U.S. HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES TO PASS THE BIPARTISAN "RESPECT
FOR MARRIAGE ACT," AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
SEND A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE U.S. HOUSE OF -
REPRESENTATIVES MAJORITY LEADER, AND FLORIDA U.S.
HOUSE REPRESENTATIVE MARIA ELVIRA SALAZAR.
WHEREAS, on June 26, 2015, in a landmark Supreme Court decision
Obergefell v. Hodges, marriage equality became the law of the land and granted
same-sex 'couples in all 50 states the fundamental right to marry under the U.S.
Constitution; and
WHEREAS, the road to nationwide marriage equality was a long one, spanning
decades of resistance and history and culminating in victory in June 2015; and
WHEREAS, on November 29, 2022, the United States Senate passed the
bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act, which, if adopted and signed into the law, would
require that the federal government and states recognize same-sex and interracial
marriages as long as they are valid in the state where they were performed; and
WHEREAS, the Act now heads to the United States House of Representatives
where it is expected to pass, as an earlier version of the Act received bipartisan support
in the House (267-157) in July 2022; and
WHEREAS, the Act was approved in response to the United States Supreme
Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe
v. Wade and eliminated the universal right to abortion; and
WHEREAS, in light of Dobbs, many citizens began to fear that their right to
marriage, legitimized in Obergefell v. Hodges, may be in jeopardy as well; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. House of Representatives has the opportunity to put those
fears to rest and grant millions of people in same-sex and interracial marriages the
certainty, dignity and respect that is their right under the U.S. Constitution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City
hereby urge the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the bipartisan "Respect for

Elvira Salazar.
