Grand Reopening Set for Flamingo Park Handball Courts
in South Beach
— The iconic courts have attracted some of the city’s best players since the 1970s —
Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach will host a grand reopening of the newly
refurbished Flamingo Park handball courts in South Beach. Please join Miami Beach officials in
celebrating this iconic amenity on Tuesday, April 12 at 8:30 a.m.
“We have a very active handball community in Miami Beach that has been eagerly anticipating
the completion of this project,” Miami Beach City Manager Alina T. Hudak said. “We wish our
handball players many more years of aces, corner throws and diving shots on these beautiful
courts.”
Handball has been a popular sport in Miami Beach since the 1970s, so much so that project
renovations were staggered to minimize disruptions in play on the indoor and outdoor courts
during the work.
The exuberant Flamingo Park handball community was recently featured in an article that
appeared in The New York Times.
In addition to resurfacing and rebuilding the courts, the project included new lighting, water
fountains and drainage improvements. Handball courts are available on a first-come, first-
served basis for approximately one hour per game.
Flamingo Park spans more than 36 acres in South Beach. As funding becomes available, the
city plans to continue to upgrade park amenities.
