City of Miami Beach Orders Flags at Half-Mast for
Beloved Commissioner
— The gesture honors the late Miami Beach Commissioner Mark Samuelian —
Miami Beach, FL – Miami Beach Commissioner Mark Samuelian was remembered by
colleagues as a tireless public servant who cared deeply about his constituents. The city has
ordered flags to be flown at half-mast to honor Samuelian, who passed away on Wednesday,
June 22.
“Mark Samuelian was a superb colleague and dedicated public servant,” Miami Beach Mayor
Dan Gelber shared. “Mark always conducted himself with integrity, and in every action,
reflected great devotion to our city and its residents. Our city weeps today.”
Commissioner Samuelian was first elected to the body in November 2017 and reelected in
2021 without opposition for a second, four-year term.
Born in Boston, Samuelian was the first member of his family to earn a college degree,
graduating cum laude from Georgia Tech with an engineering degree and an MBA from the
Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
He combined the skills of a seasoned business executive with the experience of a proven
community leader and brought three decades of business experience to the City Commission
as a former partner at the professional services firm Accenture.
“The City of Miami Beach lost a great champion today,” added Miami Beach City Manager
Alina T. Hudak. “I consider myself fortunate to have worked alongside Commissioner
Samuelian, who made it his mission to help the residents of this city day in and day out.”
A former national chess master, Samuelian enjoyed sponsoring scholastic chess in Miami
Beach schools when he wasn’t working on city issues.
Samuelian served on the Board of Directors for the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the Board of
Governors for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and was an Advisory Board Member of
the World Affairs Council of Miami. He was also a past president of Miami Beach United.
Commissioner Samuelian is survived by Laura Dominguez, his life partner, whom he met in
2012.
