BEACH, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE MONTH OF
FEBRUARY AS NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH

1926 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted historian, set aside a special period in February to
recognize the heritage and achievements of Black people in the United States; and
WHEREAS, with the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity,
Black History Week evolved to an annual, monthly celebration of achievements by Black
Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of Black Americans in U.S. history; and
WHEREAS, many Black Americans lived, toiled, and died in obscurity, never achieving
the recognition those individuals deserved, and yet paved the way for future generations to
succeed; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month is a time to reflect on the struggles and victories of Black
Americans throughout our country's history and to recognize their numerous contributions to this
nation; and
WHEREAS, the contributions of Black Americans from all walks of life and their endeavors
to learn and thrive throughout history and make unforgettable marks in our country as artists,
scientists, educators, business people, influential thinkers, members of the faith community,
athletes, and political and governmental leaders, reflects the greatness of the United States; and
WHEREAS, in spite of generations of extraordinary progress, barriers still remain on the
road to equal opportunity; and
WHEREAS, with hope and confidence about the path ahead, the Mayor and City
Commissioners of Miami Beach recognize and honor national Black History Month.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
