A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO ACCEPT A DONATION IN THE
TOTAL AMOUNT OF $50,000 FROM ART BASEL FOR THE CITY'S
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND
MATHEMATICS (STEAM) PLUS PROGRAM; AND AUTHORIZING THE
CITY MANAGER, OR HER DESIGNEE, TO MAKE SUCH
EXPENDITURES OR REIMBURSEMENTS CONSISTENT WITH THE
AFORESTATED INITIATIVE AND ITS PURPOSE.
WHEREAS, in January 2008, the City of Miami Beach, Florida ("City") entered
into an Education Compact with Miami -Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) to
enhance learning opportunities for youth; and
WHEREAS, the Education Compact reflects the desire of the Miami Beach
community to support excellence in the City's public schools; and
WHEREAS, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics ("STEM")
to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics ("STEAM") movement has
been taking root over the past several years and is surging forward as a positive model
of action to truly meet the needs of a 21st century economy; and
WHEREAS, STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student
inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking; and
WHEREAS, the end results of the STEAM education approach are students who
take thoughtful risks, engage in experimental learning, persist in problem -solving,
embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process; and
WHEREAS, on January 16, 2019 the Mayor and the City Commission adopted
Resolution No. 2019-30690, authorizing the City Manager and City Clerk to execute a
grant agreement with the Friends of the Bass Museum, Inc., for the implementation of a
Beta Test for a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)
Plus program with Miami Beach public schools (kindergarten - 12th grade) and local
cultural institutions; and
WHEREAS, the "Plus" component of the STEAM Plus initiative is the City's pilot
program to promote career and college readiness; and
WHEREAS, the City's STEAM Plus program is continuously employed today and
has expanded to seven (7) Miami Beach public schools and fourteen (14) cultural
institutions; and
WHEREAS, Art Basel, a for -profit international art fair, has graciously donated
$50,000 to the City, with the funds to be used to support the City's STEAM Plus
program.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE
CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and
City Commission hereby approve and authorize the City of Miami Beach to accept a
donation in the total amount of $50,000 from Art Basel for the City's Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, And Mathematics (STEAM) Plus Program; and
authorize the City Manager, or her designee, to make such expenditures or
reimbursements consistent with the aforestated initiative and its purpose.
