17 WH E RE A S, the College Board subm itted an Advanced Placem ent ("AP ") cours e
18 covering African Am erican Studies to the Florida Board of Education; and
19
20 W HERE A S, A P courses are rigoro us high school courses that may count fo r college credit
21 in addition to high school credit, upon successful com pletion of the A P exam ; and
22
23 W HERE AS , the AP curriculum for each of the diverse subjects is created fo r the C ollege
24 B oard by a panel of experts and college level educators in the specified academ ic discipline; and
25
26 W HERE AS , the Florida Board of Education rejected the A P course covering African
27 A m erican Studies claim ing that it lacks educational value; and
28
29 WH ER EA S , Florida's Com m issioner of Education Manny Di az Jr. states "Florida rejected
30 an AP course filled with C ritical Race theory and other obvious violations of Fl orida Law," and
31 W H ER EA S, while denying the educational value of a course focusing on the history and
32 cultur e of A fr ican A m ericans, the Florida Departm ent of Education approved the fo llow ing A P
33 courses and exam s which fo cus on the history and culture of specific dem ographics: AP Euro pean
34 History, A P Chinese Language and Culture, A P French Language and C ulture, AP G erman
35 Language and C ulture, AP Italian Language and C ulture, A P Japanese Language and C ulture,
36 A P Spanish Language and Culture; and

38 W H E REAS, the M ayor and C ity Com m ission of the C ity of Hallandale Beach support
39 Florida's high schools' ability to provide A P courses covering A frican A m erican studies.

4 0 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
41 CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH, FLORIDA, THAT:

43 SECTION 1. The foregoing "whereas" clauses are hereby adopted and
44 incorporated herein.
45 SECTION 2. Th e Mayor and City Commission of the City of Hallandale Beach
46 support the state high schools' ability to teach advanced placement African American
47 studies courses and hereby urge the Florida Department of Education to reverse its
48 rejection of the AP course on African American Studies.
49 SECTION 3. That the Clerk of the City of Hallandale beach is hereby requested
50 to send a copy of this resolution to the Florida Department of Education, the Office of
51 Governor Ron Desantis, the media, and any other interested person.
52 SECTION 4. This Resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon
53 its passage and adoption.
