A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA, REQUESTING THAT THE ADMINISTRATION
ENSURE THE MAINTENANCE OF DUNES AND
REGULAR TRIMMING OF DUNE VEGETATION IN AN
EFFORT TO PROTECT THE CITY'S DUNE SYSTEM AND
MITIGATE THE ADVERSE IMPACTS OF OVERGROWN
DUNE VEGETATION, PARTICULARLY IN THE PORTION
OF THE DUNES LOCATED BETWEEN 5TH STREET AND
15TH STREET; AND FURTHER REQUESTING THAT THE
ADMINISTRATION PROVIDE THE CITY COMMISSION
WITH A DUNE MAINTENANCE REPORT AND PLAN
THAT INCLUDES THE REGULAR TRIMMING OF DUNE
VEGETATION VIA A LETTER-TO-COMMISSION (LTC) NO
LATER THAN SIXTY (60) DAYS FOLLOWING THE
ADOPTION OF THIS RESOLUTION.
WHEREAS, beaches and dunes are a strategic aspect of the City of Miami
Beach's ("City") green infrastructure, which safeguard upland properties from the effects
of storm surge during storm events; and
WHEREAS, in many instances, healthy dune systems rely on the presence of a
healthy and extensive root system from dune grasses and other vegetation to maintain
their shape; and
WHEREAS, there has been vegetation overgrowth on the dune systems located
between 15th and 5th Streets; and
WHEREAS, vegetation overgrowth can jeopardize the stability of the dune
system, as well as obstruct important beach views enjoyed by residents and visitors;
and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission request the Administration to
ensure the maintenance of dunes and regular trimming of dune vegetation in an effort to
protect the City's dune system and mitigate the adverse impacts of overgrown dune
vegetation, particularly in the areas mentioned above, and further, request that the
Administration provide the City Commission with a dune maintenance report and plan
that includes the regular trimming of dune vegetation via a Letter-To-Commission (LTC)
no later than sixty (60) days following the adoption of this Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby request that the Administration ensure the maintenance of dunes
and regular trimming of dune vegetation in an effort to protect the City's dune system
and mitigate the adverse impacts of overgrown dune vegetation, particularly in the
portion of the dunes located between 5th Street and 15th Street; and further request that
the Administration provide the City Commission with a dune maintenance report and
plan that includes the regular trimming of dune vegetation via a Letter-To-Commission
(LTC) no later than sixty (60) days following the adoption of this Resolution.
