Tel Aviv seeking Art
Deco tips, money
By CHERYL KANE
MIAMI BEACH—A group of Israeli officials is visit-
ing Miami Beach this week to find out how the Art Deco
District became such a hit—and to learn how to dupli-
cate its success in Tel Aviv.
The officials, who timed their visit to coincide with Art
Deco Weekend, expect to return not only with new ideas
for their own"historic" district, but also with a hefty list
of potential investors. In fact, their first targets include the
same developers who made South Beach an international
hot spot.
"One of my goals is to raise some money here, to find
people who will buy some of our buildings and restore
them,"said Meital Lehavi,who will produce Israel's first
conference on Inter-
national-style archi-
tecture in Tel Aviv
this May.
The International •
style, which grew •••
out of the Bauhaus
movement,is a close •
cousin to Art Deco.
Lehavi said parts of
Tel Aviv look much like the South Beach of the mid-
1980s,before restoration efforts began.
Lehavi and her associates, who include Tel Aviv's
deputy mayor and chief engineer, have met with officials
from the City of Miami Beach, the Miami Beach
Development Corp., the Miami Design Preservation
League and just about every South Beach mover and •
shaker they could find. Among them were South Beach
pioneer Tony Goldman and brothers Craig and Scott
Robins of Dacra Development Corp.
Although no one has made any promises, Lehavi said
she hopes to see a substantial Miami Beach delegation at
the May conference — and perhaps to make some deals
by then.
"We hope that because the people here are aware of
restoration, they will understand what we are trying to do
in Tel Aviv and they will help us,"she said.
•
As a start,South Beach developers have advised Israeli
officials to single out a specific area of Tel Aviv in which
to begin restoration efforts. As it stands now, the city's
International-style district is several times larger than
South Beach and encompasses some 4,000 buildings.
"We've only listed 1,500 of those buildings to restore,"
Lehavi said."We gave up the unimportant ones.
"And we don't think we will restore all the streets at
once. In Miami Beach, they put all their strength into
Ocean Drive at the beginning."
