A ' RESOLUTION OF THE .MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA, CO-NAMING THAT PORTION OF THIRD
STREET LOCATED BETWEEN WASHINGTON AVENUE
AND COLLINS AVENUE AS "BETH JACOB WAY" .
WHEREAS, Congregation Beth Jacob has been located at 311
Washington Avenue since 1929 and now also occupies the building
located at 301 Washington Avenue; and
WHEREAS,' the Congregation has contributed significantly to the
cultural history of the City of Miami Beach, and the property
located at 301-317 Washington Avenue has been designated by the
City of Miami Beach as a historic site; and
WHEREAS, Congregation Beth Jacob owns the only properties
which front on- Third Street -between Washington Avenue and Collins
Avenue; and
WHEREAS, Congregation Beth Jacob has requested that the
portion of Third Street which is located between Washington Avenue
. and Collins Avenue be renamed as "Beth Jacob Way" ; and
WHEREAS, on January 24, 1994 the Rules and Special Events
Committee recommended in favor of co-naming the aforestated portion
of Third Street as "Beth Jacob Way" ; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Article V of Miami Beach City Code
Chapter 39; on February 16, 1994 the Mayor and City Commission held
a public hearing to consider the aforesaid co-naming request and
determined that the request should be granted.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the portion of
Third Street which is located between Washington Avenue and Collins
Avenue .is hereby co-named "Beth Jacob Way" .
PASSED and ADOPTED this 16th', day Februar , 1994 .

SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION TO CO-NAME A PORTION OF THIRD STREET
AS "BETH JACOB WAY"
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION: •
•
The Administration recommends that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution to co-name Third Street between Washington
Avenue and Collins Avenue as "Beth Jacob Way" .
BACKGROUND:
Congregation Beth Jacob, located at 311 Washington Avenue since
. 1929, has requested that the portion of Third Street from
Washington Avenue to Collins Avenue be renamed as "Beth Jacob Way. " .
This organization has made' a significant cultural impact in the •
history of Miami Beach. They own' the properties, which front on the
north .side of Third Avenue, specifically those identified as 301 •
-
317 Washington Avenue.
This matter was referred to the joint meeting of the Community
• Affairs and Rules and Special Events Committees on January 24, 1994
for consideration and review as required by Ordinance 91-2748 . At
this meeting it was agreed to recommend the co-naming of the street
as long as police, fire, and postal services were' not impeded in
any way.
At the February 2, 1994 City Commission meeting Commissioner
Liebman reported on this item. A public. hearing was set for
February 16, 1994 .
ANALYSIS: •
The street to be co-named covers the block on Third Street from
Washington Avenue to Collins Avenue. There are no overlapping
street addresses within the area under consideration and emergency
and postal services will not be inhibited as a result of the co-
naming of these streets,.
CONCLUSION:
•
The resolution to co-name Third Street from Washington Avenue to .
Collins Avenue as ' "Beth Jacob Way" should be adopted in order to
recognize the _historic property known as Congregation Beth Jacob.
