SUBJECT: Motion from the Police Citizen Relations Committee
April 11, 2023 In- Person Meeting
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (L TC) is to inform the Mayor and the Commission a
motion made by the Police Citizen Relations Committee at their April 11, 2023 in-person meeting.
Background:
The mission of the Police/Citizen Relations Committee is to recommend and endorse programs
and projects that will enhance the well-being of the residents and visitors of Miami Beach and to
provide advice to the city commission pertaining to commun ity/police relations with the aim of
improving the public's confidence in government and in particular, the police department of the
city.
The Miami Beach Police Departm ent ("MBPD") continually aspires to address crime and
community concerns through innovation and positive partnerships with the community. To support
the public safety goals of MBPD, it is the purpose of the Police/Citizens Relations Committee
("Comm ittee") to, in part, endorse programs that support this mission. The April 11, 2023 meeting
of the Police Citizen Relations committee included a discussion of spring break over the last
several years in Miami Beach, including the necessary support of the Miami Beach Police
Department, City of Miami Beach personnel at large, and the safety of the residents, visitors, and
businesses of the City. The following motion was made by Committee Member Daniel Aronson
and seconded by Committee Member Alex Fryd, the motion passed unanimously:
Motion regarding the creation of a Task Force Regarding Spring Break 2024 & Beyond
Recognizing that human lives have been lost, people have been critically injured, and that public
safety and the reputation of Miami Beach has been significantly impacted by negative news
coverage from the shootings that have occurred during the month of March every year for several
years, the Committee suggests with urgency that the Miami Beach City Commission establishes a
Blue Ribbon / Ad Hoc Task Force to support the City Commission and City Administration with
their endeavors to create a more hospitable and safe environment for all residents, employees,
and visitors immediately.
Simply put, we urgently recommend this committee be established, by no later than June 1, 2023
with proposed recommendations submitted by the end of summer 2023, in order to ensure that
this collaborative message is heard as the city moves into the planning stages for Spring Break
2024.
