SUBJECT: MINUTES OF THE SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON APRIL 25, 2022 –
VIRTUAL MEETING
Attendees:

Maria Marrero, Gladys Navarro, Oscar Llorente, Gabriel Paez.

I. Introductions and Roll Call
Chair welcomes and shares the Committee’s mission statement
Attendance is taken.
II. Approval of April 2022 minutes
Motion to adopt the minutes from the previous meeting held on April 2022.

Motion passes unanimously, 7-0
III. Juan Mestas, Assistant Chief, Miami Beach Fire Department
Chief Mestas provided and overview of Hurricane Season beginning June 1 through November
30th. He stressed the need to have a plan to evacuate your home or workplace, build a first-aid kit,
make copies of important documents (medical insurance & Medicare Cards).
For residents needing special needs, it is important that he or she register to the emergency
evacuation assistance program. Other important information was discussed:
Call 311 for non-emergencies.

IV. Senior Center Representative Report and Discussion
A. Blackstone Apartments – Maria Marrero: Absent
B. Council Towers South – Natacha Fernandez: During the daytime, residents participate in
samba exercises.
C. Council Towers North – Gladys Navarro: Absent
D. Federation Towers – Magui Benitez: All is well.
E. Four Freedoms House - Enilda Thomas: Noted that they are doing well and that the community
room is now open and hosting events.
F. Rebecca Towers – Vacant
G. Stella Maris House – Gaby Baglietto: Absent
H. UNIDAD of Miami Beach – Larissa Cajiao: Father’s Day Celebration on June 17, only for
residents and registered participants. Registrations are Monday through Friday and residents
must bring documentation to demonstrate that they are residents of Miami Beach. To participate
in the lunch program call 305-867-0051 or visit the center at 7251 Collins Avenue.

J. At-Large – Carolina Cuadros: No update.
K. Hispanic Affairs Committee Chair – Gabriel Paez: Absent
L. Jewish Community Services of South Florida – Sandra Ala: Announced that JCS officially
opened for hot meals on Espanola way. To access their service, please call (305) 576-6550. The
Center also provides behavioral health therapy sessions.
M. Mount Sinai Medical Center – Oscar Llorente, Vice-Chair: Absent

Calendar of upcoming events was reviewed.

Mount Sinai Hurricane Season preparedness.
C. Staff Liaison’s Report
City Liaison Callejas introduced his activities and provided an update on the upcoming food
distribution activities put together by his Commissioner, David Richardson. The city will
continue to hold two walks-up distributions per month:
• June 16 food Distribution at 833 6th Street.
• June 23 food Distribution at 7501 Collins Ave.
Provided a summary of May 23 City Commission.
• The next City Commission is June 22, 2022.
Provided an update on the Committee motion regarding a crosswalk on Harding Avenue and
87th Street.
VII. Closing
Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 27, 2022.
