A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ESTABLISHING THE CITY'S POLICY
GOAL OF MAKING HIGH SPEED FIBER OPTIC CABLE WIDELY
ACCESSIBLE THROUGHOUT THE CITY, TO MAXIMIZE THE QUALITY
OF INTERNET ACCESS ON COMMERCIALLY REASONABLE TERMS
FOR CITY'S RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES; AND FURTHER,
DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO WORK WITH INTERNET
SERVICE PROVIDERS TO IDENTIFY ACTIONS THE CITY COULD TAKE
TO FACILITATE INSTALLATION OF HIGH SPEED FIBER OPTIC CABLE
IN THE CITY, WITH THE ADMINISTRATION TO REPORT ITS FINDINGS
TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE
COMMITTEE WITHIN NINETY (90) DAYS.
WHEREAS, Miami Beach is home to a diverse, blooming economy with small
business, tech start-ups, entrepreneurs, and the tourism industry, as well as a thriving
residential population; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach relies on consistent and high-speed Internet
access to facilitate communications, boost economic development, and remain competitive
with neighboring cities; and
WHEREAS, the residents, businesses, and visitors of the City of Miami Beach have
different access to internet speed and service,with certain areas benefitting from fiber optic
cable, while other areas have not been able to access this quality service; and
WHEREAS, it is the goal of the City of Miami Beach to provide expanded access to
high-speed internet, specifically fiber optic cable, for its citizens, businesses, and visitors;
and
WHEREAS, as such, the Mayor and City Commission wish to establish a policy goal
of making high speed fiber optic cable widely accessible throughout the City, to maximize
the quality of internet access on commercially reasonable terms for City's residents and
businesses; and
WHEREAS, further, the Mayor and City Commission direct the Administration to
work with internet service providers to identify actions the City could take to facilitate
installation of high speed fiber optic cable in the City, with the Administration to report its
findings to the Public Safety And Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee within ninety(90)
days.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby establish the City's policy goal of making high speed fiber optic cable
widely accessible throughout the City, to maximize the quality of internet access on
commercially reasonable terms for City's residents and businesses; and further, direct the
Administration to work with internet service providers to identify actions the City could take
to facilitate installation of high speed fiber optic cable in the City, with the Administration to
report its findings to the Public Safety And Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee within
ninety (90) days.
