SUBJECT: Art in Public Places Committee Motion -July 18, 2023
The purpose of this letter to the Mayor and Commission is to provide an update regarding
a motion made during the July 18, 2023 Art in Public Places ("AIPP") Committee meeting.
1.Enhancing Infrastructure on 41st Street Corridor (Project Budget: $50,000)
Motion to request an expanded definition of "enhancing infrastructure" and to
broaden the project scope to include additional opportunities for the integration of
public art along the 41 st Street Corridor.
In February 2023, Art in Public Places issued a Call to Artists seeking professional visual
artists for a site-specific public art installation to enhance infrastructure along the 41 st
Street Corridor. The Art in Public Places Committee identified infrastructure components
between Meridian Avenue and Chase Avenue, including the bridge, lighting, and waterway
as potential areas for artistic intervention. The Call to Artists was open through May 30,
2023.
At the June 20, 2023 Art in Public Places Committee meeting, the Call to Artists
submissions were reviewed. The Committee discussed the potential of the proposals
received and concluded the project would benefit if the scope was expanded beyond
infrastructure elements in order to maximize the impact of a public art intervention in the
area. The Call to Artist will reopen from Monday, August 1 to Friday, September 29, 2023
with an expanded scope to include additional locations
The above motion was made by Gabriel Paez, seconded by Ann-Kathrin Seif and
approved unanimously by Marcella Novella (Chair), Gabriel Paez, Sara de los Reyes,
Aaron Resnick, and Yolanda Sanchez.
Members in attendance: Marcella Novella (Chair), Sara de los Reyes, Gabriel Paez, Aaron
