Item No. 3(A)(4). 6-21-23 RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH CODESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION OF BONITA DRIVE FROM 71 ST STREET TO INDIAN CREEK DRIVE AS "RABBI PINCHAS WEBERMAN DRIVE" WHEREAS, Rabbi Pinchas Weberman, a pioneer for the Miami -Dade Jewish community and one of the County's most famous and well -respected rabbis, passed away on July 27, 2022 at age 92; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Weberman was born in 1930 and moved to Miami Beach in 1960, where he founded the Ohev Shalom Congregation which is still active today at 7055 Bonita Drive; and WHEREAS; Rabbi Weberman served as the synagogue's head rabbi for over 54 years and also served as the chaplain for the Miami Beach Police Department for decades; and WHEREAS, in addition, Rabbi Weberman founded the Miami Beach Eruv Council and taught .at the Yeshiva Gedola of Miami, Toras Chaim of Miami,. and the Bais Yaakov of Miami; and WHEREAS,. in honor of Rabbi Weberman, on April ' 28, 2023, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach adopted Resolution 2023-32589, which codesignated the . portion of Bonita Drive between 71 st Street and Indian Creek Drive as "Rabbi Pinchas. Weberman Drive"; and WHEREAS, a copy of Resolution 2023-32589 is attached hereto and incorporated by reference; and MDC003 0 Agenda Item No. 3(A)(4) Page No. 2 WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach would like the County to install signage indicating this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal mast arms; and WHEREAS, this Board would also like to honor Rabbi Weberman by approving the City of Miami Beach's codesignation of the portion of Bonita Drive from 71st Street to Indian Creek Drive as "Rabbi Pinchas Weberman Drive"; and WHEREAS, the portion of Bonita Drive from 71 st Street to Indian Creek Drive is a city - maintained road located in the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, this codesignation is located in County Commission District 4, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Approves the City of Miami Beach's codesignation of that portion of Bonita Drive from 71st Street to Indian Creek Drive as "Rabbi Pinchas Weberman Drive." Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this Resolution to the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division , of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Development Services Division of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the Miami, Beach Police Department, and the Miami Beach Fire Department. The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Micky Steinberg. It was offered by Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins , who moved its adoption. WHEREAS, at the November 16, 2022 City Commission meeting, at the request of Mayor Dan Gelber, an agenda discussion item was referred to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality -of Life Committee ("PSNQLC") for it to consider the co -naming of the Bonita Drive Corridor from 71st Street to Indian Creek Drive in honor of the late Rabbi Pinchas Weberman, along with any amendment to Section 82-503 of the City Code that may be required to accomplish the co -naming; and WHEREAS,at its January 11, 2023 meeting, the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee unanimously recommended the co -naming of the Bonita Drive Corridor from 71 st Street to Indian Creek Drive in honor of the late Rabbi .Pinchas Weberman, along with any amendment to Section 82-503 of the City Code that may be required.to accomplish.the naming; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Pinchas Weberman moved to Miami Beach in 1960 with his family, and his synagogue was built in 1964, and is active to this day at the exact location of 7055 Bonita Drive; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Weberman's founding of Ohev Shalom Congregation was the beginning of his, leadership and devotion of the residents and tourists of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, on April 28, 2023, the Mayor and City Commission adopted an,. ordinance amending Section 82-503(c) of the City.Code to provide for additional criteria for the co -naming of street in honor of a spiritual leader of a prominent religious institution in the City of Miami Beach who also made significant civic contributions to the City; and WHEREAS, the proposed co -naming of the Bonita Drive Corridor from 71st Street to Indian Creek Drive in honor of the late Rabbi Pinchas Weberman would be a fitting tribute since his synagogue, is located on 7055 Bonita Drive; and WHEREAS, as Bonita Drive is a platted, public road, the proposed co -naming must be approved by the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners pursuant to Rule 9.02 of Section 2-1 of the Miami -Dade County Code. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAM1 BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee, and approve, by 5/7th vote, following a duly noticed public hearing, the co -naming of the portion of Bonita Drive Corridor, located between 71 st Street and Indian creek Drive as "Rabbi Pinchas Weberman Drive"; subject to final approval of the co -naming: by the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners, in accordance with Section 2-1, rule 9.02 of the Miami -Dade County Code.
