COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Members of the City Commission
FROM: Rafael Paz, City Attorney
DATE: May 17, 2023
SUBJECT: REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUAUTY OF
LIFE COMMITTEE DISCUSSION REGARDING RENAMING THE PRIME
SOFTBALL FIELD AT FLAMINGO PARK AS "ANDY DIAMOND SOFTBALL
FIELD" AFTER FORMER PITCHER AND COACH, ANDY DIAMOND.
In accordance with the City Code, the above -referenced item is to consider Commissioner
Laura Dominguez's proposal to name the prime softball field located in the interior portion of
the Flamingo Park, in honor of the late coach and pitcher, Andrew Mark Diamond.
Whenever a request is made to re -name portion(s) of a public facility, including interior
portion(s) of a park, Section 82-503(b) of the City Code requires the sponsor to submit the
proposal in writing to an appropriate committee (in this case, the PSNQLC).
Mr. Diamond dedicated his life to coaching thousands of kids throughout Miami Beach. His
reach extended through several generations of Miami Beach sons and daughters. Mr. Diamond
passed away on January 26, 2023.
Residents impacted by Mr. Diamond's public service are seeking to have the prime softball
field at Flamingo Park named in his honor. With a last name like Diamond, the naming would
be fitting because it seems perfect because baseball and softball fields are also commonly
referred to as "diamond fields."
