SUBJECT: MBPD SWAT Graduation Ceremony
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (L TC) is to advise you of the Miami
Beach Police Department (MBPD) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team
graduation ceremony on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Major
James Smith Community Room at the Miami Beach Police Department (1100
Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139).
MBPD's SWAT Team was first formed in 1972, and its unique blend of military
and law enforcement experience has resulted in the formation of a highly
successful and professional team. Over the years, the team has evolved into one
of the most respected units in the tri-county area. The SWAT Team currently
comprises tactical members who are deployed as needed for tactical operations.
This includes a Commander, Executive Officer (XO), Team Leaders, Operators,
Technicians and Medics from the Miami Beach Fire Department. The SWAT
Team is on call and responds to tactical incidents 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year.
During the last three weeks, our SWAT Team hosted the 7" Basic SWAT School
Training Program in the team's history. This training curriculum is considered one
of the most demanding in the field of law enforcement. Initially, 40 motivated
Miami Beach Police Officers and Firefighters applied to attend this school, but
after a rigorous selection process, the program commenced with only thirteen
(13) of the most qualified candidates. Throughout the intense three-week
program, six (6) candidates have successfully completed the training.
Your presence at the upcoming graduation ceremony to honor these dedicated
individuals would be greatly appreciated.
