SUBJECT: Building Department Achieves International Organization for Standardization
(ISO9001 :2015) Quality Management System Recertification
I am pleased to announce that the Miami Beach Building Department has successfully achieved their ISO 9001 :2015 Quality Management System (OMS) recertification. ISO9001 :2015 is the international standard that specifies requirement s for a OMS. Organizations use this standard to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
The Building Department first obtained this globally recognized certification in 2018, and recently completed the external audit which confirms their OMS continues to be effectively maintained. The recertification process includes an internal audit of the OMS, leadership meetings, risk challenges and opportunity analysis, and external recertification audit, in addition to continuous improvements.
The recertification audit took place over a three-day period, where the external auditor reviewed evidence from the department that demonstrates their conformity of all the applicable ISO "9001 :2015 standards including context of the organization, leadership, planning, support, operations, performance measure evaluation and improvement. The auditor found zero nonconformities and cited the following departmental strengths:

Use of pre-defined templates by Customer Service to respond to customers when sending e-mails on
common topics (i.e., requirements for permit, how to address a violation) is an excellent vehicle to save
time and ensure consistency in responses.
City of Miami Beach Building Department employees were observed to demonstrate a high degree of
professionalism, patience, and knowledge when providing services to customers.
The organization is defined by a set of highly complex processes which intertwine and depend on each
other to fulfill customer requirements while ensuring the City of Miami Beach 1s compliant with a variety
of codes and ordinances. These processes are well defined, and the organization is continually seeking
ways to reduce processing time, streamline steps, and keep the public informed of not only requirements
but how to successfully use their services.
The Building Department also provided evidence that it upholds its quality polic y, which reads as follows:
"The City of Miami Beach Building Department is committed to providing the highest
quality services to our commun ity by uniformly enforcing building codes in a timely
manner, continuously improving through innovation and streamlining services,
collaborating with city departments, and improving our professional competencies."
