Miami Beach City Hall, Miami Beach Police Headquarters and Fire Headquarters (Station #2) will be bathed in orange light starting at sundown every day next week. “Nearly one million people in the U.S. live with MS every day, including a number of people in our community,” said Miami Beach City Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, who sponsored a resolution to support the effort “Miami Beach is proud to be one of the cities around the world that are recognizing MS awareness week.” MS affects more than 2.8 million worldwide with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. Most people with MS are diagnosed between 20 to 50. “The lighting of city hall will be the catalyst in making Miami Beach a hub for social change and awareness around Multiple Sclerosis,” said Jonathan Urra of the National MS Society Miami Community Council. “To achieve our vision of a world free of MS and connect with as many people as possible, we must shine a light on the challenges of MS,” added Milagros Alexis Delgado, National MS Society Chair of the Miami Community Council for the Mid and South Florida Chapter.
