Subject: Miami Beach First Generation College Scholarship Program Update
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to update you on the status of the City's FirstGeneration Scholarship Program for Miami Beach residents attending Florida International University (FIU).
This scholarship program resulted in 57 Miami Beach residents attending FIU in the 2023-2024 school year receiving a need-based scholarship of $1,875. Funding for this program is provided through a partnership between the City of Miami Beach, Miami Beach Police Athletic League, and the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation contributing a total of $35,000, as well as 2:1 matching funds from the FIU Foundation partners at $70,000 under the FIU First Generation Scholarship Program. Total funds available in 2023-2024 were $105,000.
The scholarship program saw a 22.8% increase in the number of Miami Beach residents receiving this need-based scholarship from the prior year:

In addition to being a Miami Beach resident and FIU student, recipients of the Miami Beach scholarship must qualify for financial aid through the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides need-based grants to low income undergraduate and certain post-baccalaureate students.
