LETTER TO COMMISSION
L.T.C. No. 105-1998
July 15, 1998
TO:
FROM:
Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
Sergio Rodriguez
City Manager~
SUBJECT: COLLINS AVENUE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
During the Sutnick Hour at the last Commission meeting, Mr. Henry Kay expressed concerns
regarding traffic problems on Collins Avenue between 21 st and 63rd Streets.
The Police Department reviewed its traffic enforcement efforts from the first of the year to date. This
review revealed that the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), has used the SMART sign
for speed deterrent purposes, on Collins Avenue three times a week, with 41st to 63rd Streets
specifically targeted. In addition, STEP officers have conducted 35 assigned traffic details including
one Saturation Patrol and one DUI Roadblock (targeting DUI s and speeders on weekend nights,
once a month on a rotating City-wide basis). These efforts resulted in 14 arrests and the issuance of
655 traffic citations for Moving Violations.
The Police Department makes every effort to rotate its resources throughout the City. The Police
Department will continue to enforce speeding on a City-wide basis and will ensure that Collins
Avenue receives its share of attention.
