SUBJECT: Retirement of Building Director
The purpose of this L TC is to formally advise you that Ana Salgueiro has submitted her retirement
letter and will be stepping down as the City of Miami Beach Building Official and Building
Department Director to pursue some of her other life passions, including that of being an active
parishioner at her church.
She has provided the next 60 days as a transition period to provide a smooth transition of
responsibilities and allow time for the Administration to plan for the future leadership of this critical
Department. Effective immediately, I have instructed Human Resources to begin the search for a
new and permanent Director. In the coming weeks, I will be considering options to appoint an
interim Department Director and Building Official. This is highly specialized work that requires
specific certification per State law.
Under Ana's tenure, the Building Department managed to keep construction activity moving
during a global pandemic that saw many portions of our economy come to a grinding halt. Her
leadership in mana ging a transition to completely digital permitting allowed the process to
continue while keeping all stakeholders safe. In an unforeseen tragedy, the Champlain Towers
South condominium building collapse on June 24, 2021, raised many questions and concerns
around the safety of living in tall buildings along the South Florida coast. The Building Department
rapidly mobilized inspectors to visit more than 400 Miami Beach buildings greater than three
stories -setting the benchmark for restoring confidence in the safety of these properties. The
subsequent legislation is still playing out across the State but was heavily influenced by the
proactive measures taken by our City and Ana's team. The Building Department also earned ISO
9001 certification under her leadership. This certification is one of the world's most recognized
and respected quality management systems standards that ensures an organization has a robust
system in place to consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements.
We are thankful for the seven years of dedication that Ana provided to our City and wish her the
very best on her future endeavors.
