A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE
PUBLIC SAFETY AND QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE, AT ITS FEBRUARY
14, 2024 MEETING, TO PROCEED WITH LIGHTING ENHANCEMENTS AT THE
CROSSWALK LOCATED AT PINE TREE DRIVE AND SHERIDAN AVENUE, IN
FRONT OF SCOTT RAKOW YOUTH CENTER, TO IMPROVE SAFETY FOR
PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLES; AND FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO EXECUTE ANY DOCUMENTS OR AGREEMENTS WHICH MAY
BE REQUIRED IN CONNECTION WITH THE INSTALLATION OF THE
LIGHTING ENHANCEMENTS.
WHEREAS, at its October 18, 2023 meeting, the City Commission approved a referral to
the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (PSNQL Committee), to discuss
lighting improvements of the crosswalk located at Pine Tree Drive and Sheridan Avenue (in front
of Scott Rakow Youth Center), to improve the safety for pedestrians and vehicles; and
WHEREAS, Public Works staff conducted a lighting assessment of the crosswalk and
presented its findings at the February 14, 2024 PSNQL Committee meeting; and
WHEREAS, the intersection currently has marked crosswalks and a full traffic signal;
however, there is only one streetlight on the west side of the intersection; and
WHEREAS, Public Works staff recommended adding one light within the general area;
and
WHEREAS, additionally, Public Works staff also proffered to coordinate with Florida
Power and Light (FPL) in an effort to have two more lights added to the nearby FPL electrical
pole, so there would be a joint use pole; and
WHEREAS, the PSNQL Committee members unanimously made a favorable
recommendation to proceed to the full City Commission for approval; and
WHEREAS, the City Manager recommends accepting the recommendation of the PSNQL
Committee; and further authorizing the City Manager to execute any documents or agreements
which may be required in connection with the installation of the lighting enhancements.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA,that the Mayor and City Commission
hereby accept the recommendation of the Public Safety and Quality of Life Committee, at its
February 14, 2024 meeting, to proceed with lighting enhancements at the crosswalk located on
Pine Tree Drive and Sheridan Avenue, in front of Scott Rakow Youth Center, to improve safety for
pedestrians and vehicles; and further authorize the City Manager to,execute any documents or
agreements which may be required in connection with the installation of the lighting
enhancements.

The Administration recommends approving the Resolution.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
At its October 18, 2023 meeting, the City Commission approved a referral to the Public Safety
and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (PSNQL)to discuss lighting enhancements at the
crosswalk located at Pine Tree Drive and Sheridan Avenue (in front of Scott Rakow), to improve
the safety for pedestrians and vehicles.
Public Works staff conducted a lighting assessment of the crosswalk, and presented its findings
at the February 14, 2024, PSNQL meeting. The intersection currently has marked crosswalks
and a traffic signal. However,there is only one streetlight on the west side of the intersection.
Public Works will install one additional streetlight within the general area. Additionally, Public
Works has requested that Florida Power and Light install two more streetlights attached to the
existing power poles as joint-use poles. The Committee members made a favorable
recommendation to proceed to the full City_Commission for approval.
SUPPORTING SURVEY DATA
Results from the 2022 Resident Survey related to the City's perception and satisfaction show
an overall approval of 67.4%, and rated the City as a good place to live.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
No fiscal impact, Public Works will use existing Operations funds.
CONCLUSION
The Administration recommends approving the Resolution.
