RESOLUTION NO.' 2024-32960
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE FLORIDA
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO PHASE AND/OR
RESCHEDULE THE START DATE FOR THE FUTURE ALTON
ROAD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT FROM THE NORTH
MICHIGAN AVENUE TO EAST OF ALLISON ROAD, UNTIL THE
COMPLETION OF THE I-395/STATE ROAD 836/1-95 SIGNATURE
BRIDGE PROJECT AND THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY BRIDGE
REPLACEMENT PROJECT TO AVOID FURTHER IMPACTS TO
TRAFFIC ENTERING AND EXITING MIAMI BEACH.
WHEREAS, State Road ("SR") 907/Alton Road is an arterial roadway under the
jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT"); and
WHEREAS, the FDOT is currently planning to reconstruct Alton Road from North
Michigan Avenue to East of Allison Road (the"Alton Road Reconstruction Project"), which
will provide roadway, drainage, street lighting and traffic signalization improvements,
enhance the City's water and sewer infrastructure, and provide safer facilities for bicyclists
and pedestrians; and
WHEREAS, at present, the segment of Alton Road from North Michigan Avenue
to South Ed Sullivan Drive/43rd Street is currently funded by the FDOT and anticipated to
begin construction in 2026; and the construction of the project is reasonably expected to
cause traffic congestion in the area; and
WHEREAS, additionally, there are other projects on major thoroughfares being
undertaken by the FDOT and Miami-Dade County, including the I-395/SR 836/1-95 Miami
Signature Bridge ("Signature Bridge Project") which is in construction and anticipated to
be completed in late 2027, and the Venetian Causeway Bridge Replacement Project,
which is in design and anticipated to begin construction in 2025, both of which will affect
vehicular traffic exiting and entering the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the initiation of the Alton Road Reconstruction project in 2026 is likely
to further exacerbate traffic congestion in the City, causing inconvenience and frustration
for residents, visitors, and commuters; and
WHEREAS, considering the delays on the completion of the Signature Bridge and
the construction project impacts on traffic entering and exiting Miami Beach, the Mayor
and City Commission respectfully urge FDOT to consider phasing and/or rescheduling
the start date for the Alton Road Reconstruction project until after the completion of the
I-395/SR 836/1-95 Signature Bridge project and the Venetian Causeway Bridge
Replacement project would help minimize disruptions to traffic flow and alleviate the
burden on residents and businesses.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby urge the Florida Department of Transportation to phase and/or
reschedule the start date for the future Alton Road Reconstruction project from the North
Michigan Avenue to East of Allison Road, until the completion of the I-395/SR 836/1-95
Signature Bridge project and the Venetian Causeway Bridge Replacement project to
avoid further impacts to traffic entering and exiting Miami Beach.
