Rent/Mortgage/Utility Assistance Program Update
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission ("L TC") is to notify the Mayor and City Commission
of the status of the City's rental assistance and mortgage relief programs available to residents.
On February 27, 2023, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity notified the Office of
Housing and Community Services that the City was awarded $381,620 in State Community
Development Block Grant-Coronavirus (CDBG-CV) funds. These funds were used to provide
financial assistance to qualifying Miami Beach residents at risk of eviction or utility shut-off for up
to six (6) consecutive months of rent/mortgage and utilities payable to the mortgage company,
landlord, or utility service, respectively, upon verification of income eligibility (80% Area Median
Income (AMI)).
Furthermore, an additional $51,500 of the City's FY 22 CDBG entitlement funds have been
encumbered for the rent/mortgage and utility assistance program to assist individuals currently on
the waitlist for assistance.
On June 27, 2023, the City began accepting applications for rent, mortgage, and utility assistance
for qualified Miami Beach households. As of March 14, 2024, the Administration has fully
expended CDBG-CV funds and Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds. The
available funding provided rent, utility, and/or mortgage assistance to 96 households.
While we will no longer be taking rental, mortgage, and utility assistance applications, the
Administration remains committed to exploring alternative funding sources through local, state,
and federal grants. Additionally, we will collaborate with partner agencies to offer referral resources
to residents in need. If additional funds are received, the Administration will reopen the application
process.
If you need additional information, please contact Alba Tarre, Director, Office of Housing and
Community Services at 305-673-7000 ext. 26175.
