OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
LTC# 130-2024 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Rickelle Williams, Interim City Manager 'RJ;.}
DATE: April 8, 2024
SUBJECT: Calendar of Earth Month Celebrations
As Earth Month begins, I am excited to announce that the City of Miami Beach is collaborating
with community partners on a series of events with the goal of celebrating and educating our
residents. These activities underscore ways our residents can be a part of protecting our island's
unique environment, surrounded by both the beautiful Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. A
notable highlight is the second annual Miami Beach Turtle Fest, a family-friendly event hosted
by the Environment and Sustainability Department in collaboration with the Boucher Brothers,
taking place at Altos Del Mar Park on Saturday, April 20, 2024. These events will be publicized
and shared broadly through our communications channels.
•Monday, April 1 -Thursday, October 31 -Sea Turtle Season
With the first sea turtle eggs being laid on Miami Beach this past weekend, sea turtle
nesting season is officially here! Multiple City departments are collaborating to help
protect our favorite marine friends through activities such as installing lighting retrofits to
include amber lights or shading for beachfront properties and launching a Flip the Switch
campaign to educate the public. The community is encouraged to help the sea turtle
population thrive by switching to sea turtle-friendly lighting, closing blinds or curtains at
night, and keeping a distance from sea turtles and their nests.
