A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO IMPLEMENT A PET WASTE CLEAN-UP PILOT
PROGRAM BY INSTALLING ENHANCED PET WASTE BAG STATIONS
AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH TO HELP PREVENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND
HEALTH HAZARDS AT A COST NOT TO EXCEED $75,000.
WHEREAS, pet waste can contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can pose a
risk to human health and other animals; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends
properly disposing of pet waste to reduce the risk of infection and illness; and
WHEREAS, pet waste that is not properly disposed of can also contaminate water
sources and waterways, harming the environment and posing a further risk to humans;
and
WHEREAS, pet waste can attract pests such as flies which can spread diseases
and further increase public health risks; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach recognizes the importance of responsible pet
ownership and the need for effective pet waste management to maintain a clean and
healthy environment and waterways;and
WHEREAS, the proper disposal of pet waste helps to prevent environmental
contamination and health hazards to humans and other animals; and
WHEREAS, the current pet waste bag stations in the City may not adequately
meet the growing demand for convenient and efficient disposal of pet waste; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wish to direct the City Administration
to implement a pilot program by installing enhanced pet waste bag stations at strategic
locations throughout the City, as determined collaboratively by the Public Works
Department, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Environment and
Sustainability Department; and
WHEREAS, the enhanced pet waste station pilot program shall include, at a
minimum, the following features:
a. Durable and weather-resistant materials to withstand varying environmental
conditions.
b. Adequate signage providing clear instructions on the proper use of the stations.
c.. Regular maintenance schedules to ensure cleanliness and functionality.
d. Sufficient capacity for waste bags to accommodate high usage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that.the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the City Administration to implement a pet waste clean-up pilot
program by installing. enhanced pet waste bag stations at strategic locations throughout
the City of Miami Beach to meet the growing demand of convenient and efficient disposal
of pet waste at a cost not to exceed $75,000.
