A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY .COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO INITIATE
NON-BINDING DISCUSSIONS WITH THE OWNER OF THE ROOSEVELT
THEATER, LOCATED AT 770 ARTHUR GODFREY ROAD (THE "THEATER"),
FOR THE CITY'S POTENTIAL PURCHASE OF THE THEATER; FURTHER,
AUTHORIZING THE ADMINISTRATION TO OBTAIN AN APPRAISAL OF THE
THEATER, AND REFERRING THIS MATTER TO THE FINANCE AND
ECONOMIC RESILIENCY COMMITTEE FOR REVIEW OF THE APPRAISAL
REPORT AND ANY PROPOSED TERMS FOR THE POTENTIAL PURCHASE OF
THE THEATER.
WHEREAS, the Roosevelt Theater, located at 770 Arthur Godfrey Road (the "Theater")
was constructed in 1948 and designed by architect Albert Anis in the Post War Modern (Minto)
style of architecture; and
WHEREAS, the Theater opened in 1949 and hosted many film screenings and live
performances over the .decades; and
WHEREAS, the Theater, which is adjacent to the City -owned parking lot at 4000 Chase
Avenue, has been vacant since approximately 2006; and
WHEREAS, the renovation of the Theater is an important component of any effort to
revitalize the 41St Street corridor; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to direct the Administration: i) to meet
with the property owner and explore the opportunity to purchase the Theater; ii) to obtain an
appraisal of the Theater, to assist in those discussions; and (iii) to present the appraisal report
and summary of discussions with the owner to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee
for its review and recommendation of proposed terms for the potential purchase of the Theater,
along with options for sources of funds to complete the purchase.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY 'THE _ MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission direct the Administration to initiate non-binding discussions with the owner of the
Roosevelt Theater, located at 770 Arthur Godfrey Road (the "Theater"), for the City's potential
purchase of the Theater; further, authorize the Administration to obtain an appraisal of the
Theater, and refer this matter to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee for review of
the appraisal report and any proposed terms for the potential purchase of the Theater.
