The City of Miami Beach will commemorate the 159 Juneteenth Independence Day by hosting its fifth annual Juneteenth Celebration in remembrance of the day in 1865 when all enslaved Black people were emancipated. The Juneteenth Experience Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19, 2024 7 p.m. The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL The Juneteenth Experience event will be a riveting interdisciplinary performance seamlessly melding spoken word, dance, music, and multimedia elements, promising an unforgettable 60-minute journey. The array of local and international talents includes leading vocalists and an incredible band under the direction of Musical Director King Friday; dance from Zest Collective under the direction of Gentry George; original text and poetry by Arsimmer McCoy and creative producer Miriam King; and set projections and digital scenes rendered by Bajan artists and creative Russell Watson. The Betsy Hotel Juneteenth 2024 Wednesday, June 19, 2024 6 p.m. to 11p.m. The Betsy Hotel, 1440 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL Juneteenth Jazz at The Betsy features John Harden, Piano, and Ja'Nia Harden, Vocals in The Piano Bar at The Betsy Hotel. John and Ja'Nia skillfully play off of each other during their performances with influences that include Bobby McFerrin, Dinah Washington, Al Jarreau, Jimmy Smith, Robert Glasper, and Bobby Floyd. Set against the backdrop of the turbulent civil rights movement, the film highlights the strategic planning and grassroots organizing that went into these pivotal marches. Director Ava DuVernay's vision brings a sense of urgency and authenticity to the story, capturing the intense emotions and high stakes of the struggle for equal voting rights. Harlem Renaissance and the Tropics Sunday, June 23, 2024 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Wolfsonian FIU, 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL Explore the cultural reach of the Caribbean in the Harlem Renaissance during a day of talks and conversation inspired by our Silhouettes exhibition. Art historian Samantha Noel kicks things off with a keynote presentation about how American artists like Aaron Douglas and Josephine Baker used "tropical aesthetics" to shape the development of Black modernity. Following the talk, enjoy a reception and a panel discussion with FIU faculty that will draw connections between the broader cultural movement, the tropics, and featured works in the show, offering fresh perspectives and insights into this transformative time.
