SUBJECT: 1998 NATIONAL RECREATION AND PARKS ASSOCIATION (NRPA)
CONGRESS
For the first time in 20 years, the City of Miami Beach will host the National Recreation and Parks
Association (NRP A) Congress on September 23-27, 1998. Our Recreation, Culture and Parks
Department Director, Kevin Smith is the co-chair of the Host Committee. On his behalf, I would
like to extend a special invitation to you to join us at the Congress as a guest of the local host
committee. As our guest, a full delegate package will be delivered to your office on Sept. 22, 1998,
immediately prior to the opening of the conference.
The five-day Congress offers exciting and informative educational sessions and entertainment,
including socials and seminars on park management, eco-tourism, and historic preservation of park
sites and youth programs in at-risk communities. Tours of our outstanding facilities and parks, as
well as other attractions including but not limited to Metrozoo, the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, Bill
Baggs State Park and Everglades National Park will also be offered. The Congress offers the City
of Miami Beach an opportunity to showcase our parks and community to the thousands of park
professionals and civic leaders from around the country who will be in attendance. Your
participation and presence would certainly enhance our efforts to impress this nationwide audience.
The NRP A is a national organization with more than 23,000 members dedicated to promoting the
benefits of parks and recreation through programs that enhance the quality of life for all people.
Special attention is paid, for example, to extending programs that support youth in high-risk
environments, resolve crime, encourage healthier lifestyles and create safer communities.
