ANALYSIS The attached Ordinance was prepared at the request of Vice-Mayor Laura Dominguez and Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez for consideration at the May 15, 2024 City Commission meeting. At the October 18, 2023 City Commission meeting, two items sponsored by Vice-Mayor Laura Dominguez and co-sponsored by Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez were referred to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee ("PSNQLC") to discuss the co-naming of 12th Street between Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue in honor of Naomi Wilzig and 13th Street between Ocean Drive and Meridian Avenue in honor Gloria Estefan, respectively, along with any amendment to Section 82-503 of the City Code that may be required to accomplish the co-naming. Both items were discussed at the February 14, 2024 PSNQLC meeting, and received favorable recommendations to the City Commission to proceed with both co-naming and necessary amendments to Section 82-503(c)1.) of the City Code with a sunset date. Similarly, at the February 21, 2024 City Commission meeting, Commissioner Tanya K. Bhatt referred an item to the PSNQLC to discuss a motion by the Miami Beach Commission for Women (the "Commission"), citing lack of streets co-named after women in the City, and providing a list of seven (7) noteworthy candidates for consideration for co-naming of additional City streets in honor of women who have significantly impacted the City's civic and political life. At the April 17, 2024 PSNQLC meeting, the Committee discussed the Commission's motion, agreeing that the City could benefit from uplifting and honoring more women who have contributed to the history of the City.
