A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE
ADMINISTRATION TO DEVISE A PLAN TO ENCOURAGE
DEVELOPERS WHO WISH TO BUILD A WORKFORCE HOUSING
PROJECT IN MIAMI BEACH, INCLUDING THOSE THAT SUBMIT
APPLICATIONS UNDER THE LIVE LOCAL ACT, TO GIVE
ACCEPTANCE PRIORITY IN WORKFORCE HOUSING UNITS TO
OTHERWISE INCOME-ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS IN THE FOLLOWING
CLASSES: CITY OF MIAMI BEACH LAW ENFORCEMENT
PERSONNEL AND FIREFIGHTERS, OTHER CITY OF MIAMI BEACH
EMPLOYEES, AND MIAMI BEACH SCHOOL TEACHERS; AND
FURTHER, DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO PRESENT ITS
PLAN FOR DISCUSSION AT THE SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 CITY
COMMISSION MEETING.
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach 2040 Comprehensive Plan (the "Comprehensive Plan"), at.
Guiding Principle 6: Prioritize Workforce Housing, states that "[t]he City shall encourage
redevelopment that provides workforce and affordable housing"; and
WHEREAS, there is a critical shortage of workforce housing the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach recognizes the importance of providing workforce
housing to ensure that essential community service providers can live within the city they serve;
and
WHEREAS, City of Miami Beach law enforcement personnel, firefighters, other City
employees, and teachers at Miami Beach schools are crucial to the safety, well-being, and
education of the City's residents; and
WHEREAS, encouraging developers of workforce housing projects, including developers
that submit applications under the Live Local Act, to give acceptance priority to these individuals
will help attract and retain these vital workers within the City; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach seeks to support its workforce by making housing
more accessible and affordable to those who contribute significantly to the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the Administration to devise a plan to encourage developers who wish
to build a Live Local project in Miami Beach to give acceptance priority in workforce housing units
to otherwise income-eligible individuals in the following classes: City of Miami Beach law
enforcement personnel and firefighters, other City of Miami Beach employees, and Miami Beach
school teachers; and further, directing the administration to present its plan for discussion at the
September 11, 2024 City Commission meeting.
