LTC 290-2024 City of Miami Beach Hosts the 2024 Annual National Homeland Security ConferenceMIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC# TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: LETTER TO COMMISSION Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission Rickelle Wiliams, Interim City Manager /() July 15,2024 City of Miami Beach Hosts the 2024 Annual National Homeland Security Conference The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC)is to provide information on the 2024 National Homeland Security Conference (NHSC),taking place from Monday,July 22 through Thursday,July 25,2024 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The conference is the annual meeting of homeland security and emergency management professionals from the nation's largest metropolitan areas,state governments and institutions that deal with homeland security issues.The NHSC offers a valuable opportunity for Miami Beach to demonstrate how vital federal homeland security funding has been in building preparedness capabilities within our city as well as the criticality of continuing these investments in the long term. Previously known as the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI)Conference,the NHSC got its start in 2007 in Miami at the Intercontinental Hotel and was attended by fewer than 250 people.Nearly 20 years later,the conference has grown,and is expected to attract nearly 1800 attendees.Attendees will be hosted at more than 20 Miami Beach hotels.The conference is anticipated to have significant representation from federal entities as both attendees and presenters. The City of Miami Beach is a recipient of UASI grant funding.The City received $230,000.00 in UASI funding for FY 2023.Staff from the Miami Beach Fire Department and its Division of Emergency Management,the Miami Beach Police Department and our Finance Department Grants Management Division are part of the Conference Committee and approximately 25 City staff members will be in attendance.Mayor Meiner is scheduled to provide welcome remarks,along with Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava and City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.Our Environment and Sustainability Department will conduct a resilience infrastructure tour highlighting our efforts to adapt to and combat the effects of sea level rise. Conference activities begin Monday,July 22,with opening ceremonies taking place on Tuesday,July 23 at 9:00 a.m.On Wednesday,July 24 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm,there will be a display of public safety vehicles, equipment and other assets from the four-county area positioned in front of the Convention Center.This will be followed by a special demonstration of regional capabilities at Port Miami,Terminal J,for conference participants.
