LTC 307-2024 Operation EngageMIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC#LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission Rickelle Wams, Interim city Manager /(_) July 19,2024 Operation Engage The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC)is to provide information on Operation Engage,a recently launched initiative led by the Miami Beach Police Department ("MBPD")to enhance community engagement and improve the Department's responsiveness to community concerns. Expanding on MBPD's current community policing strategies,the Department has established a new initiative entitled Operation Engage.Cognizant of the various styles of community policing in a uniform capacity,the Department's leadership will direct the workforce to seek opportunities to increase their visibility and community impact through engagement as they perform their regular duties and conduct directed patrols.This ongoing initiative aims to create opportunities for our MBPD Officers,Supervisors,and Public Safety Specialists (PSSs)to interact with residents and business owners throughout the community,increasing collaboration,cooperation,and understanding. In furtherance of this initiative,MBPD Operations Supervisors will identify critical locations within their areas of responsibility across the entire city that are ideal for fostering these interactions. Some of the preliminary primary areas identified for enhanced engagement include: •The 41 st Street Business Corridor •Lincoln Road (between Washington and West avenues) •The SOFNA,WAvNA, and North Beach neighborhoods •Ocean Drive •Entertainment District Business Areas (Washington Avenue •Beachwalk and Baywalk •City Parks Police supervisors will personally lead their teams in these engagement activities,continually seeking opportunities for officers and Public Safety Specialists to leave their vehicles and connect with community members,business leaders,and religious institutions. The first of the high-visibility engagement initiatives began on July 17,2024 along Lincoln Road involving uniform patrol officers,PSSs and RDA Officers.Further details about Operation Engage will be provided as the initiative progresses.
