June Staffing Update for the Building Department
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Commission with a monthly update,as requested in
Resolution No.2023-32656,on staffing updates from the Building Department,with a report to
specifically identify (1)each vacant position in the Building Department by title,section,and trade;
(2)the length of time each vacant position has remained vacant,by section and trade;(3)the
total number of vacant positions and overall vacant positions in the department;and (4)specific
steps taken each month to fill positions,such as the total number of interviews conducted and
other relevant efforts to fill the position.See Attachment A for data requested.
Below please find a summary update of our recent recruitment activities for the month of June
2024:
•Advertised eleven (11)positions on the City's website via GovernmentJobs.com,Career
Builder,Indeed,and Gold Coast Schools of Construction.
•Additional efforts for recruitment have included postal mail and emails to registered license
holders as listed on the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR),
advertising from the international Code Council,Building Officials Association of Florida,
South Florida Building Officials Association,and Board of Rules and Appeals.
•The Department has actively participated in industry conferences and events to promote
and enhance recruitment efforts,including the 2023 Southeastern Building Conference
and the 2024 Building Officials Conference.
•Based on the applications received in May,we conducted twenty interviews for city
positions in June.Fifteen for Permit Clerk I and five (5)for Senior Code Compliance
Officer.
•Based on these interviews,the department has selected four (4)candidates to fill the
Permit Clerk I position and one (1)Senior Code Compliance Officer.
•In June,we received a total of 22 applications,out of which only eight (8)were from
qualified candidates for the technical trade positions. Interviews will be scheduled with
these qualified applicants.
•Maintained nine (9)permit clerk positions with staffing agency temps to maintain service
level requirements and assist with workload of staff out on leave.
317-2024
•Maintained seven (7)temporary professional services through CAP Government Agency
to supplement our plan review and inspection services.
•Maintained two (2)Reviewer-Independent Contracts (ICAs)with other Building
employees from other Municipalities to continue providing timely services.
In addition,Human Resources and/or the Building Department have recently:
•Closed out all continuous job announcements and referred qualified applicants to the
Building Department for the month of June 2024 on June 30,2024.
•Reopened all advertisements for the positions that we currently have vacant;the posting
will close on July 31,2024,unfilled positions will reopen to commence with a fresh pool of
applicants.
•Continue to encourage employee referrals to encourage current employees to recommend
possible candidates,resulting in two referrals.
•Continue to mention available opportunities and inform potential candidates during our
monthly meetings and trainings with the public.
