'-'.,J TO: Mayra Diaz-Buttacavoli Assistant City Manager FROM: ~~":~~~e;:~~;ector ~ ~ DATE: September 21, 1998 SUBJECT: Request for information on Friends of the BMOA fund-raising techniques for the Capital Campaign You questioned fundraising techniques of the Friends of the Bass described in a letter dated July 17. This letter listed various "naming opportunities" at a certain amount, when the item might cost more or less than the amount listed. (See attached) As I understood your question, it had to do with naming opportunities reflecting the actual cost of items or locations listed. I explained they do not. Nowhere in the letter does it say the amounts listed are the actual cost of the item. The letter clearly states that these are "naming opportunities" and the contribution will be utilized for the overall capital campaign. This is the standard practice in philanthropy There are dozens of analogous examples. For instance, in churches and synagogues naming opportunities include stain glass windows, prayer books, pews, ect. for a contribution, not necessarily related to the cost. "Leaves" for a tree-sculpture at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor Elementary and Temple Beth Sholom are offered as a naming opportunity for an amount unrelated to that part of the sculpture. The actual cost of the plaques on the walls ofMt. Sinai Hospital has no relationship to the size of the contribution. This also applies to the Miami Science Museum's "bricks" program. Friends of the Bass are raising as much money as possible for the capital campaign and to endow programs they support. This effort is but one of the many professionally-advised techniques they employ and the technique you question enables people of all means to participate. They have major naming opportunities as well. Friends are continuing their strong efforts to raise funds through the period of new construction. They intend to continue doing so even afterward to further their endowment. This is also standard. cc: Bass Museum Trustees Friends of Bass Board of Directors THE FRIENDS OF THE BASS MUSEUM SELECTED NAMED GIFT OPPORTUNITIES The Museum Shop: Display Racks (6) Display Cases (10) Electronic control equipment (3) $1,500.00 each $2,500.00 each $2,000.00 each The Museum Cafe: Chairs (40) Tables (10) Kitchen Equipment Dishwasher Refrigerator Cooking Utensils $100.00 each $250.00 each $3,000.00 $2,500.00 $25.00 to $100.00 each The Museum Library: Tables (5) Xerox Machines (2) Display Cases (4) Listening Stations Shelves (25) Archival & Artifact equipment $2,800.00 each $1,800.00 each $1,500.00 each $1,500.00 each $1,000.00 each $1,000.00 each The Computer Learning Center: Equipment monitors (5) computers (5) printers (5) Audiovisual equipment $800.00 each $2,000.00 each $2,000.00 each $1,000.00 each Office Suites: Desks (5) Chairs (5) Cabinets File (5) Supply (5) $500.00 each $150.00 each $150.00 each $150.00 each An attractive plate bearing the donors name will be permanently affixed to any of the above items.
