LTC#383-2024 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO:
FROM:
Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner an Meft Commission
Eric Carpenter, City Manager k uvii
DATE: September 5, 2024
SUBJECT: Biscayne Beach Elementary Community Schoolyard Kickoff
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to update you on the status of the City's partnership
with the Trust for Public Land (TPL} for a Community Schoolyard at Biscayne Beach Elementary
on the jointly owned playfield. The kickoff for this initiative will take place at Biscayne Beach
Elementary (800 77th St, Miami Beach, FL 33141) on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 3:00
pm with activities exclusively for students and families to follow.
Resolution No. 2023-32551 was adopted approving a partnership with the Trust for Public Land
and Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) to engage the local Miami Beach community
and partners to design a community schoolyard. Community schoolyards are open to the
community after school hours and are designed by students, teachers, and neighbors as nature
rich hubs for outdoor play, community health, and climate resilience. They can include outdoor
classrooms, gardens, stormwater capture, traditional playground equipment, nature play areas,
trails, trees, water features, and more.
The kickoff will allow students and community members the opportunity to meet the TPL project
team and learn about environmental/design careers, brainstorm about the new schoolyard, dig
into aerial photos and historic imagery of the site, and go outside to make sensory observations
in the future schoolyard space.
We will continue to support our vision of being a prosperous city with a special flavor of arts,
culture, education, and business with the management objectives of being known for (PreK-12)
educational excellence.
If you plan to attend the kickoff or have any questions regarding this initiative, please feel free to
contact Dr. Leslie Rosenfeld, Chief Education and Performance Officer.
