A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 2024 AS
"CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH.
WHEREAS, September has been designated National Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month to honor the children whose lives have been tragically cut short by cancer, and to
acknowledge those whose lives have been irrevocably impacted by this devastating illness; and
WHEREAS, cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S.
between infancy and 15 years of age; and
WHEREAS, one in every 260 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before
the age of 20; and
WHEREAS, childhood cancers cross all racial, ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic
backgrounds, with tens of thousands of children each year confronting this battle with
remarkable bravery and hope; and
WHEREAS, while advancements have been made in the treatment of some childhood
cancers, cure rates for many forms of childhood cancer remain below 50%, and the incidence
of these cancers is rising at a faster rate than in any other age group; and
WHEREAS, childhood cancer impacts not only the affected child but also their entire
network of family and friends, causing significant emotional and financial strain; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach acknowledges the profound impact of childhood
cancer on our community and recognizes the necessity for increased research and support; and
WHEREAS, this month, the Mayor and the City Commission wish to honor the countless
dedicated healthcare professionals, organizations, charities, and parent advocacy groups who
provide invaluable support to patients and families, offering guidance, encouragement, hope,
and financial assistance, and who work tirelessly to uplift the spirits of children battling cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby designate the month of September 2024 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month" in the City of Miami Beach.
