Police Chaplain Swearing In Ceremony
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC)is to inform the Mayor and City Commission about
the upcoming Police Chaplain Swearing In Ceremony scheduled to take place on Monday,
September 23,2024 at 11:30 A.M.in the MJS Community Room of the Miami Beach Police
Department.
The Police Chaplain Program is an integral part of the police family, creating a crucial partnership
with faith-based leaders of the Miami Beach community. The chaplains provide emotional and
spiritual support to police personnel especially during times of crisis. The chaplains are not only
available to comfort, counsel and provide referrals to officers and staff, but also make themselves
available to the victims of traumatic events.
Immediately prior to the ceremony, the Police Department will be hosting an orientation and
training session for the chaplains related to the notification of families of personnel who are
severely injured or killed, the visiting of severely ill or injured members, the provision of counseling
and personnel emotional support, the duties of attending official events, and the expectations
around the delivery of invocations and benedictions when required, among other topics.Additional
specialized training is also scheduled for later in the year.
Because of the vital service chaplains provide the community, the Police Department honors their
multidenominational contributions by officially swearing them into the Department as members.
Please join the Administration and Police Department in commemorating this special occasion and
welcoming the newest members of the Police Chaplain Program:
1.Menachem Dechter
2.Jim Dugard
3.Ben-Zion Korf
4.Erica Sommer
5.Chaim Summer
