A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE FLORIDA
LEGISLATURE'S HONORARY DESIGNATION OF THE PORTION OF
BAY AVENUE BETWEEN W. 25TH STREET AND W. 27TH STREET IN
SUNSET ISLANDS IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY WAS DESIGNATED AS
THE "ABE RESNICK DRIVE"; AND URGING THE FLORIDA
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ("FDOT") TO TAKE ANY AND
ALL ACTIONS, AS REQUIRED, TO EFFECTUATE THE DESIGNATION
OF AS APPROVED BY AND CONSISTENT WITH FLORIDA SENATE
-'ILL 389.
WHEREAS, pursuant to Florida Senate Bill 389, which was passed by the Florida
Legislature during the 2024 Legislature session, the portion of Bay Avenue between W.
25th Street and W. 27th Street in Sunset Islands in Miami-Dade County was designated
as the "Abe Resnick Drive"; and
WHEREAS, as provided in Section 334.071(2) of the Florida Statutes, the
honorary designation of a transportation facility requires the placement of markers by
the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT"); and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 334.071(3) of the Florida Statutes, the
placement of markers by FDOT designating the street is contingent upon the City
Commission passing a resolution in support of the honorary designation; and
WHEREAS, Abe Resnick was a survivor of the Holocaust and Concentration
Camp Kaunas in Lithuania; and
WHEREAS, Abe Resnick lived in Miami-Dade County from 1960 until his death
on September 3, 1998; and
WHE'sEAS, Abe Resnick was the first Hispanic Commissioner of the City of
Miami Beach, serving four terms from 1985 to 1993; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Resnick worked on many committees and projects including the
Cuban-Hebrew Congregation, Miami Beach Latin Chamber of Commerce, American
Gathering and Federation of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, as well as many more
projects; and
WHEREAS, among Mr. Resnick's most cherished contributions is the Miami
Beach Holocaust Memorial, a 42-foot bronze arm lifting emaciated victims upward,
located at Meridian Avenue and Dade Boulevard, within the view of the City Hall where
Mr. Resnick spent many days; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission are desirous of continuing to honor
Mr. Resnick by supporting the Florida Legislature's designation of the aforementioned
portion of the Bay Avenue in Mr. Resnick's honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby support the Florida Legislature's honorary designation of the
portion of Bay Avenue between W. 25th Street and W. 27th Street in Sunset Islands in
Miami-Dade County was designated as the "Abe Resnick Drive"; and urge the Florida
Department of Transportation ( "FDOT") to take any and all actions, as required, to
effectuate the designation of as approved by and consistent with Florida Senate Bill 389.
