A RESOLUTION BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, COMMITTING TO THE PRESERVATION AND
PROTECTION OF JACK STEWART'S "APOLLO" MURAL IN
PERPETUITY, IN RECOGNITION OF THE MURAL'S HISTORIC
SIGNIFICANCE, REGARDLESS OF ITS FINAL LOCATION OR ANY
FUTURE RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS.
WHEREAS, Jack Stewart was a well-regarded American artist whose work is
recognized by the Smithsonian and can be found in collections and museums
throughout America and around the globe; and
WHEREAS, Stewart's work has been widely exhibited, and he is represented in
numerous public, private, and corporate collections, with his largest mural, the "Apollo,"
installed on the façade of the Versailles Hotel on Collins Avenue between 32nd and
33rd Streets in Miami Beach, Florida in 1950s; and
WHEREAS, the modernist glass-mosaic mural, measured at 17 feet high by 92-
foot-long depicted Apollo, one of gods of Greek mythology, racing his sun chariot
towards his twin sister, on the façade of the Versailles Hotel, and just around the corner,
on the building's south façade, are their mother and younger twin siblings; and
WHEREAS, the Mural helped launch Stewart's career into the spotlight and is
one of his early and most important pieces, as well as being an important piece of
Miami Beach history; and
WHEREAS, the mural graced the façade of the Versailles Hotel for decades,
until it was removed for renovations of the Versailles Hotel in January, 2015; and
WHEREAS, the part of the building depicting the mural was demolished, and the
mural was taken apart and stored in a privately owned outdoor facility; and '
WHEREAS, on February 9, 2021, the Historic Preservation Board unanimously
approved a motion in support of the relocation, restoration and installation of the Jack
Stuart Apollo mosaic on the east/northeast facade of the Scott Rakow Youth Center in a
manner that retains the same proportions as when it was located at the Versailles Hotel
property; and
WHEREAS, however, the mural proved to be too large to be installed on the
façade of the Scott Rakow Center; and
WHEREAS, on November 8, 2021, the Art in Public Places Committee passed a
motion, requesting for the Mayor and City Commission to identify a suitable location for
Jack Stewart's Apollo mosaic, as the proposed facade of Scott Rakow Youth Center
was not large enough to accommodate the work; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wish to affirm its commitment to
preserving and protecting the "Apollo" mural in perpetuity, regardless of its final location
or any future relocation requirements.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby commit to the preservation and protection of Jack Stewart's
"Apollo" mural in perpetuity, in recognition of the mural's historic significance, regardless
of its final location or any future relocation requirements.
