Resolution 2024-33257 RESOLUTION NO. 2024-33257 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT OUTDOOR COMMUNITY ROLL CALLS, AT LEAST TWICE WEEKLY, IN ORDER TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND INCREASE POLICE OFFICER VISIBILITY IN VARIOUS MIAMI BEACH NEIGHBORHOODS. WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach (the "City") is a unique, coastal community which, due to a myriad of factors, consistently experiences public safety and quality of life complaints from the City's residents and visitors; and WHEREAS, the consistent utilization of proactive and visible policing strategies has proven to be effective for police departments to maintain public safety and strengthen police- community relations within their jurisdiction; and WHEREAS, various cities, including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago have successfully integrated community roll calls in particular neighborhoods, generally held in parks, plazas, and other public spaces, allowing residents to witness police briefings and interact with police officers directly; and WHEREAS, the presence of police officers within the community, while engaging with residents and visitors, is an effective deterrent for criminal activity and has contributed to fostering safer communities; and WHEREAS, enhancing interactions and communications between police officers and community stakeholders aids in addressing specific community concerns and leads to more productive policing strategies; and WHEREAS, residents, community leaders and business owners should be encouraged to proactively collaborate with police officers during roll calls in an effort to enhance public safety; and WHEREAS, community policing efforts, such as outdoor community roll calls allow police officers to gain a better understanding of the needs of the community and the community's expectations of the Police Department. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, directing the Police Department to develop and implement outdoor community roll calls, at least twice weekly, in order to enhance community engagement and increase police officer visibility in various Miami Beach neighborhoods.
