Resolution 2024-33344 RESOLUTION NO. 2024-33344 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING ITS ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORT FOR THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA'S FINALIST BID FOR THE FLORIDA MUSEUM OF BLACK HISTORY; AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA, THE PRESIDENT OF THE FLORIDA SENATE, THE SPEAKER OF THE FLORIDA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE MINORITY LEADER OF THE SENATE, THE MINORITY LEADER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND MEMBERS OF THE BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM TASK FORCE. WHEREAS, the State of Florida has embarked on the creation of a Florida Museum of Black History, which will serve as a vital institution to preserve, educate, and celebrate the rich cultural and historical contributions of Black Floridians; and WHEREAS, the City of Opa-locka has been selected as one of three finalists for the location of the Florida Museum of Black History, along with St. Augustine and Eatonville; and WHEREAS, Opa-locka's proposed museum site is a 4.5-acre, state-controlled property that currently hosts the annual "Art of Transformation" showcase during Art Basel, offering a vibrant platform for artistic expression, workshops, and exhibitions highlighting the African diaspora; and WHEREAS, the City of Opa-locka has a demonstrated commitment to community development through initiatives such as financial independence and entrepreneurial guidance programs, along with cultural preservation projects like the Opa-locka Heritage Trail, which reflects the city's unique Moorish Revival architecture and deep-rooted history; and WHEREAS, the establishment of the Florida Museum of Black History in Opa- locka would enhance ongoing community-based programs aimed at placemaking and heritage conservation, while also strengthening the city's cultural infrastructure and furthering opportunities for economic development; and WHEREAS, the City of Opa-locka is ideally suited to host the Florida Museum of Black History due to its commitment to preserving Black culture, its location in South Florida's diverse and vibrant community, and its existing infrastructure to support the museum's mission and vision; and WHEREAS, the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force commenced its evaluation process in June 2023 and is expected to make its final decision by the end of 2024; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach, recognizing the significance of this institution for the State of Florida and its potential to uplift historically underserved communities, fully supports the City of Opa-locka's bid to host the Florida Museum of Black History. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby expresses its enthusiastic support for the city of Opa-locka's finalist bid for the Florida Museum of Black History; and directing the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Governor of Florida, the President of the Florida Senate, the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, the Minority Leader of the Senate, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and members of the Black History Museum Task Force.
