A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH (DVAM) ALONGSIDE
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, AND DIRECTING THE
ADMINISTRATION TO IMPLEMENT INITIATIVES BEGINNING IN
OCTOBER 2025 TO PROMOTE AWARENESS OF DVAM, INCLUDING
ILLUMINATING CITY BUILDINGS IN PURPLE.
WHEREAS, October is recognized as both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), two critical observances that raise
awareness and encourage advocacy for vital health and social issues; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was first observed in
October 1987 and continues to be a month of recognition, support, and advocacy for
those affected by domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence affects millions of individuals and families across
the nation, transcending all demographics, cultures, and socio-economic groups, and it
is crucial to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and provide support for victims and
survivors of this trauma; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to recognize that domestic violence not only affects the
physical safety of individuals but also impacts their mental, emotional, and economic well-
being, with long-lasting effects on survivors, families, and communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to addressing social justice
issues, promoting safety for all residents, and providing access to resources for
individuals impacted by domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, as part of its ongoing commitment to community advocacy and public
awareness, the City of Miami Beach seeks to support and recognize Domestic Violence
Awareness Month (DVAM) alongside Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, an
important time to focus on advocacy, education, and healing for all those affected by
these critical health and social issues; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach supports various efforts aimed at raising
public awareness and increasing understanding of domestic violence, including
encouraging the public to participate in educational campaigns, outreach activities, and
community events throughout the month of October.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach hereby proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
(DVAM) alongside Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and direct the Administration to
implement initiatives beginning in October2025 to promote awareness of DVAM including
illuminating City buildings in purple.
