Resolution 2025-33472RESOLUTION NO. 2025-33472 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO EXPLORE THE VIABILITY OF INSTALLING METAL SECURITY BOLLARDS IN DESIGNATED AREAS OF THE CITY INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE NORTH END OF OCEAN DRIVE, THE BEACHWALK ALONG MID -BEACH, AND LINCOLN ROAD; AND DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO IDENTIFY ANY OTHER AREAS WITH HEAVY PEDESTRIAN VOLUME WITHIN THE CITY THAT WOULD BENEFIT FROM THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY INITIATIVE; AND FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO PRESENT ITS FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS AT THE APRIL 23, 2025 CITY COMMISSION MEETING, TO INCLUDE ANY COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS INITIATIVE. WHEREAS, as a densely populated urban area that hosts throngs of visitors each day, the City's streets and walkways are consistently busy and crowded; and WHEREAS, the protection of the health, safety and general welfare of the City's residents and visitors is the most fundamental function performed by the City; and WHEREAS, recent vehicular attacks that have killed and injured dozens of pedestrians in the public spaces of other cities have led to an increased interest in highly impact -resistant site protections, including the installation of assault -resistant bollards designed to withstand multiple waves of vehicular bombardment; and WHEREAS, pedestrian and traffic congestion on City streets and walkways, particularly pedestrians along the North End of Ocean Drive, the Beachwalk along Mid - Beach, and Lincoln Road are present en masse on a daily basis; moreover, this increases exponentially during any major or localized special event; and WHEREAS, metal security bollards help to protect people and structures from accidental or intentional vehicular collisions, and can be installed around the perimeter of buildings as well as along walkways and roadways; and WHEREAS, the City Administration is directed to explore and provide the Mayor and City Commission with an update on the viability of placing metal security bollards at designated areas within the City that would enhance pedestrian safety and serve to provide a critical first line of defense against a vehicular attack. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, hereby directs the City Administration to explore the viability of installing metal security bollards in designated areas of the City including, but not limited to, the north end of Ocean Drive, the Beachwalk along Mid -Beach, and Lincoln Road; and directing the Administration to identify any other areas with heavy pedestrian volume within the City that would benefit from this important safety initiative; and further, directing the City Administration to present its findings and recommendations at the April 23, 2025 City Commission meeting, to include any costs associated with this initiative.
