A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO
ENSURE THAT, WITHIN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS, ALL FIRE DEPARTMENT
PERSONNEL COMPLETE AN ASSAULT AND ABUSE TRAINING COURSE
DESIGNED TO FAMILIARIZE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WITH THE UNIQUE
PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS INHERENT IN
SITUATIONS INVOLVING INCIDENTS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ABUSE;
AND DIRECTING THAT ALL FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL HIRED AFTER
IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS RESOLUTION ALSO COMPLETE THE
AFOREMENTIONED ASSAULT AND ABUSE TRAINING WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF
THEIR INITIAL HIRE; AND FURTHER, DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO
ENSURE THAT FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL COMPLETE A DIFFERENT,
BUT EQUALLY APPLICABLE, ASSAULT AND ABUSE TRAINING EVERY 2
YEARS THEREAFTER.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of
all residents, visitors, and emergency responders; and
WHEREAS, incidents of sexual assault and abuse require emergency responders to provide
sensitive, informed, and trauma -informed patient care to survivors; and
WHEREAS, providing training to familiarize Fire Department personnel with the unique
considerations involved in responding to sexual assault and abuse incidents will improve patient
care, build trust with the community, improve communication with sexual assault victims, and
enhance the professional readiness of emergency responders; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach recognizes the importance of ongoing professional
development to ensure that emergency responders consistently increase and enhance their
knowledge and skills in addressing the unique challenges posed by these incidents.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, hereby directs the City Administration to ensure that,
within the next 6 months, all Fire Department personnel complete an assault and abuse training
course designed to familiarize emergency responders with the unique patient care considerations
and characteristics inherent in situations involving incidents of sexual assault and abuse; and
directing that all Fire Department personnel hired after implementation of this Resolution also
complete the aforementioned assault and abuse training within 6 months of their initial hire; and
further, directing the Administration to ensure that Fire Department personnel complete a different,
but equally applicable, assault and abuse training every 2 years thereafter.
