LTC 080-2025 Miami Beach First Generation College Scholarship Program UpdateDocusi9n Envelope ID: 7A2162A6-4860-4194-AB5C-07O6ADA874E0 MIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC# TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: LETTER TO COMMISSION Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission Eric Carpenter, City Manager ~ ~ February 19, 2025 Miami Beach First Generation College Scholarship Program Update The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to update you on the status of the City's First- Generation Scholarship Program for Miami Beach residents attending Florida International University (FIU) in the 2024-25 school year. In August of 2024, the Mayor and Commission passed Resolution 2024-33018 authorizing funding to increase with contributions from the City not to exceed $30,800, and $3,900 each from the Miami Beach Police Athletic League and the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation. This scholarship program resulted in 56 Miami Beach residents attending FIU in the 2024-2025 school year, each receiving a needs-based scholarship averaging $2,067.86. Funding for this program is provided through a partnership between the City of Miami Beach, the Miami Beach Police Athletic League, and the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation contributing a total of $38,600, as well as 2:1 matching funds from the FIU Foundation partners at $77,200 under the FIU First Generation Scholarship Program. Total funds available in 2024-2025 were $115,800. The scholarship program has provided a total of $325,828.16 in funds to Miami Beach residents receiving this need-based scholarship: School Year # of Residents Scholarship Amount (Average) 2022-2023 44 $2,387.00 2023-2024 56 $1,875.00 2024-2025 56 $2,067.86 Total Impact 156 $ 325,828.16 In addition to being a Miami Beach resident and FIU student, recipients of the Miami Beach scholarship must qualify for financial aid through the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides need-based grants to low income undergraduate and certain post-baccalaureate students.
